Eng. Serena Pagliula served as a consultant for the Municipality of Lecce for the European project “SMARTENCITY – Towards European Zero CO2 Emission Cities” (GA no. 691883), handling the management of technical and administrative activities in support of the Municipality.
The project, funded under the European Horizon 2020 research and development program, concerns the development of a systemic, adaptable and replicable approach to transform European cities into sustainable, smart and energy-efficient environments through urban planning integrated with the optimization of urban energy consumption and renewable energy production.
The project is based on the concept of “Smart Zero Carbon City”, where CO2 emissions and the energy requirements of the urban center are minimized through the use of innovative technologies that enable energy savings while simultaneously informing citizens about their energy consumption.
The “Smart Zero Carbon City” approach was tested in three cities called “Lighthouse”: Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, Tartu in Estonia and Sonderborg in Denmark. The entire approach was also replicated and tested with the development of Integrated Energy Plans in two other cities called “Follower”: Lecce (Italy) and Asenovgrad (Bulgaria), in order to demonstrate the adaptability of the developed solutions and maximize the overall impact of the SMARTENCITY project on a European scale.
