TRANSFORMATION OF FORMER GALATEO HOSPITAL INTO SOCIAL HOUSING

  • Client: Public
  • Location: Lecce
  • Year: 2020
  • Collaborations: LGSM_A

The subject of this International Design Competition is the regeneration of the building erected in the 1930s and originally used as a hospital, called “Ex-Galateo”, located in Lecce, to be converted into social housing and innovative services for living and the community. The recovery project aims to rethink the use of the city’s public heritage and create a solidarity condominium and a network of services that will contribute to mending the urban fabric through the strengthening of social relations fostered by new public spaces and services provided by associations, cooperatives and social enterprises, which will be able to establish their operational headquarters within the renovated complex.

The ground floor of the building is organized to offer services to the neighborhood and to ensure functional continuity with the services, residential areas and surrounding green spaces.

This regeneration project aims to rethink the building’s intended use by enhancing its inherent functionality and its strongly identifying characteristics in a modern key.
